Location: COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, Expo City Dubai

Description: As businesses and organizations worldwide commit to ambitious climate goals, it is critical to ensure the ecosystem is in place to hold them accountable to their targets and to create transparency on the progress they make. If the right measurement is in place, follows a standard framework across an industry, and is accessible to relevant stakeholders, it will increase sustainable investment.

Opening remarks: Henrik Skovby, Chief Executive Officer, Dalberg Group

Discussion leader: Dr. Sonja Stuchtey, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Landbanking Group

Participation will be by invitation only. Attendees to the Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum can join the roundtable audience on a first come first served basis.

12:30-13:00 (GST): AIA lead Prof Rob Miller to present at Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum roundtable on Zero Emission Aviation: The Sky is the Limit

Location: COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, Expo City Dubai

Description: How can we scale up the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), how can we accelerate the development of long-haul hydrogen flight, and how can we mitigate the climate impact of aircraft-induced clouds? The panel will identify the key policies, investments, and technologies, needed over the next five years to achieve zero-climate-impact aviation by 2050. The session will preview some of the findings of a global aviation model, developed by experts from around the world.

Co-chair: Rob Miller, Whittle Lab Director, University of Cambridge

Co-chair: Haldane Dodd, Executive Director, Air Transport Action Group (ATAG)

Participation will be by invitation only. Attendees to the Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum can join the roundtable audience on a first come first served basis.

6 December

13:00-14:00 (GST): AIA lead Prof Rob Miller will be a panelist for session on Decarbonisation: the big picture at ATAG Global Sustainable Aviation Forum

Location: DP World Pavilion, Green Zone, Expo City Dubai

Time of ATAG Global Sustainable Aviation Forum: 10:00-14:00

Description: This panel will take place as part of the Global Sustainable Aviation Forum. The Forum is a side event during COP28. In 2021, the global aviation industry declared that it will achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, supported by accelerated efficiency measures, energy transition (including sustainable aviation fuel) and innovation across the sector in partnership with governments around the world. Government support for net zero (a crucial element) was confirmed in October 2022 when a similar goal was adopted for international flights during the 41st session of the ICAO Assembly.

ATAG’s Global Sustainable Aviation Forum / COP28 will showcase the latest innovations and developments in the field of aviation climate action.  We will focus on:

  • radical future technologies and enhancements to existing aircraft
  • operational improvements
  • aviation’s energy transition
  • sustainable aviation fuel: supply and demand, scale up in production, investment needs and opportunities.

16:00-17:00 (GST): Showcase event: Aviation Impact Accelerator – Raising ambition to accelerate Net-Zero flight

Location: First Abu Dhabi Bank Theatre, Climate Finance Hub, Green Zone, Expo City Dubai

Description:  This headline Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA) event will showcase our four areas for raising ambition for the aviation sector transition to net zero using one of the AIA’s interactive modelling tools. The four areas are: The four areas are: (i) Scaling truly sustainable SAFs, (ii) Operation blue skies, (iii) Shifting the business model of aviation and (iv) Unlocking hydrogen transformation. This collaborative panel will highlight the importance of whole sector action between industry, government, academia and civil society for driving this ambition forward. The audience will hear contributions from across the sector including from an engine manufacturer (Rolls-Royce), airport (Heathrow Airport), aircraft manufacture (Boeing), financial organization (First Abu Dhabi Bank) and academia (Whittle Laboratory). The event will convey the importance of interconnected delivery and highlight where action is needed from key stakeholders.

Chair: Rob Miller, Director, Whittle Laboratory, University of Cambridge

Panelists:

17:15-18:15 (GST): Prof Rob Miller and Dr Paul Hodgson present at UK Government roundtable: Fueling the future of aviation: scaling sustainable aviation fuels in the UK and globally

Location: UK Pavilion, Blue Zone, Expo City Dubai

Description: Join the UK for a panel discussion between leaders from across the aviation sector, civil society, academia, and finance on the importance, benefits, and barriers to global Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) growth, and as we present the progress the UK has made in driving the supply and demand for SAF and supporting wider aviation decarbonisation.

The AIA will demonstrate one of their whole-system modelling tools which provides a holistic view of the aviation sector to make appropriate and evidence-based choices over time that minimise the industry’s resource requirements, costs and climate impact. This demonstration will focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), demonstrating the scale of resources required for SAF production, their potential to significantly reduce the climate impact of aviation and how the cost of SAF production could fall with time with greater investment in R&D and the scaling-up of production. The session will also link SAF scale-up to the importance of also focusing on contrail mitigation and driving fuel efficiency.

Joining instructions: first come first served basis for those with blue zone access.
